Get Ready to Send Some Joy

The clock is ticking, most of the mini-sessions have come and gone or maybe your budget is tighter than usual.  You want to show up in mailboxes this year to connect with friends and family who you won’t see but it feels like the window to have photos done is closing.  I’ve got good news for you, friend, it’s not too late!

Save the money for a photoshoot and create some adorable, authentic pictures yourself. Here are five tips on how to take quality snapshots of your own family!  And, with #COVID, this year is probably THE BEST year to send out some joy!  Friends and family just want to see you and they need a good laugh!

Grab some pandemic-centered props and have a little fun with your pictures.  You’ll bring a smile and a chuckle to someone’s face – isn’t that the best gift this year?

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION:  Choose a place that means something to you.  It could be a park where the kids love to play, a local dive you frequent, even your front porch.  We are most comfortable in places that we love so the ease of sitting for a few pictures won’t feel so awkward.  Bonus:  If the kids are in their happy place, smiles will come easily!

WHAT TO WEAR:  Stick to colors that are easy on the eyes – fewer patterns and more solids.  Layers of texture add an interesting vibe without creating too much visual clutter.  Think, leather boots, a solid shirt beneath a nubby sweater and some fun jewelry for girls.  For the guys, consider a sweater or jacket over a plaid shirt or bow tie.  It gives a little visual interest but doesn’t overwhelm the eyes.

TIMING IS EVERYTHING:  The lighting before dusk provides warm and natural beauty.  It can be a tricky hour for littles, though.  So, bring snacks, water, etc. to make sure everyone’s belly is full.  That will help when the witching hour approaches and kids start to crumble.

THE MORE, THE BETTER:  Snap as many pictures as you can.  You’re sure to end up with at least a few good ones if you take a lot!

MAKE A PLAN:  Before you head out to your photoshoot, do a little research to determine the types of snapshots you like.  Then, replicate those with timing in mind.  It’s best to try to take pictures of the whole family first, before anyone gets cranky.  Then, zero in on single shots of each kid, if you want headshots.  If not, move right to the fun, candid pictures.  These are usually the best – everyone has loosened up and you can typically capture a few silly moments.

REMEMBER:  The point of the pictures is to capture your family’s personalities, not to try to convey perfection!  The authentic you is what brings the most joy to the people you love!
